25+ Ways To Deal With Writer's Block
Writer's block.It is every self-respecting writer's nightmare.
This is especially true if you make a living out of writing. Just as I do.
There are quite a few ways to beat a writer's block.
1. First and foremost, accept that you have a problem. No amount of denial could pull you out of the situation you're currently in.
2. Then, change your environment. Work elsewhere.
3. Play some music. Rock, ballad, classic.
4. Do something creative. Dance. Sing. Draw. Design. Anything to get those juices flowing.
5. Read. A novel, today's newspapers, your previous works. Be inspired to write. Or rewrite.
6. Exercise. Physically and Mentally. Have a daily 5-minute workout for better brain health. Challenge your mind with mental games.
7. Break your writing routine. Start from the middle or end instead of the beginning. Write about your favorite topic in the planet - food, dogs, beach, babies. Or something out of norm - ghosts, aliens, untold mysteries.
8. Experiment with different types of prose. Compose odes for your loved ones. Give friends testimonies on popular social networks. Email your colleagues and co-workers.
9. Form a new habit. Begin with 10 minutes per day. Then 15 minutes a few days later. Continue doing this gradually as it becomes as natural as breathing.
10. Disconnect from technology. Turn off your PC. Unplug your internet router. Sometimes, they only serve as distractions. Use good ol' pen and paper instead.
11. Make an outline. Note down plot and characters. Concentrate on a word, a phrase, or a sentence. Let it run through your head.
12. Be an OC (obsessive-compulsive) maniac. Come up with a TO DO and NOT TO DO list. Schedule your entire day and fill it up with hourly tasks. Check which hour in the 24-hour frame works best for your writing needs.
13. Focus on an ordinary object. Chair, clock, window, pillow. Make a story out of each.
14. Walk around in circles. Do not stop until you feel dizzy. The movement could trigger your sleeping brain.
15. Leave your house. Ride a jeep, tricycle, bus. Observe your surroundings.
16. Go for a short trip. And recharge.
17. Make yourself a cup of coffee. Or tea. Plain hot water is a good alternative too.
18. Try the Glass-of-Water technique. Fill up a glass. Let the H2O hear your intention. Drink half of it. Go to sleep. Drink the rest when you wake up.
19. Do something productive. Wash the dishes. Cook a meal. Clean your bedroom. Anything to keep your mind occupied. Be careful not to overdo it though or you might forget your pending tasks altogether.
20. Communicate with the outside world. Perhaps, you're lonely and all you need is someone to talk to.
21. Meditate. Search your soul. Find out why you love writing in the first place.
22. Create a blog. Use it as a personal diary to jot down your thoughts.
23. Create multiple blogs. That is, if one weblog doesn't do the trick.
24. Think of your bills! You need a constant reminder that you can't afford to stay idle for a long time.
25. Target a goal. Want a new smartphone or tablet? Then, get your pretty face back to work. Give yourself a deadline.
26. Take a nap. You're bound to have a fresh mind afterwards. Be mindful NOT to do it every two, three hours or so or you'll end up wasting the whole day sleeping (just as I did, eer still do, that is).
27. Take a shower. Maybe it's just excess heat that can't get out of your system.
28. Eat. Perhaps, a little nutrition will solve your dilemma.
If all else fails... PRAY.
Prayer is the best armor against all trials.
